Dave Dick
David Victor Dick, a renowned British jockey, participated in the Grand National from 1951 to 1965. His notable victory came in 1956 when he rode E.S.B to win the race. Notably, he achieved a remarkable feat by winning both races of the Lincoln-Grand National Spring Double, a feat unmatched by any other jockey. Additionally, Dick holds the record for completing the notoriously challenging Aintree course with clear rounds on nine occasions. It is worth mentioning that the Aintree Clear Rounds Award, which recognizes jockeys completing more than five clear rounds, was established in 1986, long after Dick`s achievements.
Born in Ashampstead, Berkshire, Dick was the son of David Purvis Dick, a jockey and racehorse trainer from Glasgow, and his wife Alice Isabel Ivall. He passed away at the age of 76 in Reading. In 1969, Dick entered into matrimony with Caroline Lockhart. Together, they were blessed with a son and a daughter, the latter being Daisy Dick, who went on to win an Olympic bronze medal.
